A program in engineering prepares students for careers as engineers. Many students will study subjects such as computer science, mathematics, and chemistry.

Overview

There are currently 3,278 institutions offering engineering in the United States. 2,234 institutions offer degrees at the bachelor's level in engineering and 1,828 institutions offer graduate level degrees in engineering.

Generally, a bachelor's level engineering degree requires 4 to 5 years of coursework and may be a Bachelor of Science degree, a Bachelor of Applied Science degree, or a Bachelor of Arts degree depending on the institution. Approximately 49% of students at the undergraduate level in engineering pursue degrees at the masters level, while 10% of students seek doctoral level degrees. Students can pursue graduate level engineering degrees such as Master of Business Administration degrees, Master of Materials Science and Engineering degrees, and Master of Manufacturing Engineering degrees.

On average, 117,544 students graduate from engineering programs every year. Of those, 2,118 students graduated with engineering certificates, 2,508 with an associate's level degree, 73,294 with a bachelor's level degree, 36,164 with a master's level degree, and 7,737 with a doctorate level degree.
