How Stuff Works
by alnilam

One of the main sources of documentation available at Open-Site is represented by the "How To", a collection of tips and tricks dedicated at making the use of Open-site tools easier and better.

In this article, alnilam covers some basics regarding features for category editing.

@Links
- General Information
@links are used to make a link to a subcategory not directly under the current one. They become useful if a category of a famous person can have more than one name, like Pro Wrestlers for instance. @links allow for a more organized ontology.
- How to manage them
To create an @link, type in the category path in the top text field, and the desired name in the bottom. While the path cannot contain spaces, the title can. Once the submit button is clicked, a new @link appears on the editor and public sides. @links cannot be edited. A link to delete an @link is available beside each on the editor side.
Alphabet Bars
Alpha bars are an easy way to sort subcategories that might otherwise be difficult to sort. Subcategories can then be sorted by title.
- General Information
Alphabars can be used to ease the listing of subcategories that are not easily sorted. They can also be used when there are many subcategories in one larger category.
- Creating an Alphabar
Alphabars are automatically made when 5 single character subcategories appear in one category. Numbers and capital letters are arranged in alphanumerical order, beginning with 0 and ending with Z above all other subcategories.

To delete an alphabar, the deletion of all such single letter cats is necessary.

Altlang Links
Altlang links are used to link parts of the encyclopedia to the equivalent category in a different language. These are used like related category links, except that they will link to a category under International on the English side, and under International and English cats under an International cat.
- Additional information
Altlang links link categories in different languages. They appear on the public pages in the language of the category they link to. The category paths cannot contain spaces. They paths must be entered one per line to be generated properly.
Category Charters
Category Charters are useful for telling other editors what the category is for. At this point in time, Charters are only viewable by other editors.
- General Information
Category Charters are a way an editor can find out exactly what sort of content should go into the category, and can also outline the basic 'ground rules' of the category. Charters can contain any necessary information: how to list certain things, where to put subcats, etc. Any editor can view them.
- Editing a Charter
Charters are added when the category is created, they do not, however, contain any data. To edit a charter, click the link on the charter page, and input all the necessary information into the text field. HTML can be added to charters.
Category Sections
Category sections are useful in categories that do not involve enough information to make the creation of subcategories a feasible idea. They can also appear when there are several subcats with information in them.
- General Information
Category Sections are used when a category contains a lot of information, but not enough to warrant creating a subcategory. They appear on the public page in the order they were created.

Sections appear below the subcategories.

- Creating a Category Section
To create a section, hit the submit button near the top of the page. This will allow the creation of a new section, and bring up a page with two input fields. The top field is the title, and the bottom is the content. HTML can be placed into the content, but is not recommended.

Editing a section can be done by clicking the link beside the title on the edit page.

- Section Templates
Certain templates can only be applied to sections. These can be made by selecting a template from the drop-down menu. The template generated then appears on the public page as a row of a table. Additional rows can be added by adding additional sections with the same template.
- Power Reviewed Edit
This tool allows for the editing of all the sections at one time. Multiple sections can be deleted and edited at one time.
