Q: Hey gameshints. Thanks for accepting the invitation to share with us some of your thoughts about Open-site. How did you find about it in the first place?
A: I found out about open-site when I was talking to mjflick about how I was waiting for my application to be accepted to ODP, he invited to edit open-site in the meantime and I did. ![]() |
Q: Do you find editing at Open-site different from ODP?
A: I find OEP is more adding your own content instead of spending lots of time going through submissions of others.
Q: Are the tools and the features suitable for the focus of the project?
A: Yeah, the tools and features are at OEP suitable (when working).
Q: Indeed, OEP is a young project, and not all things are 100% at their place. However, a young project offers also different opportunities, and can be more easily shaped due to editor's desires. What do you think OEP needs in order to achieve its maturity?
A: I think OEP could use more editors, there is lots of information out there, there just needs to be people to help organize it.
Q: Would you see problems with more editors? I mean, the more we are, the more are the chances of stepping on each others toes... Or do you think the structure of OEP allows an exponential growth in the number of editors without any additional problems appearing?
A: I think there is enough room for there to be lots more editors without them getting in each other's way. However, with more people it is harder to make decisions like the ones about the structure.
Q: Do you think the decisions are enough democratic? Would you prefer more or less democracy here? Like, for example, new category requests to be voted on in the forums, or to handled by a single human with supreme powers? (both extreme examples of democracy :D)
A: I don't think new requests should be voted on in the forums, it might turn into a popularity thing. A group of people with a strong knowledge of the editing guidelines should decide. However, things like major changes to structure/content should be voted upon in the form, and a group of people with great knowledge should make a decision based upon the people's comments. Otherwise nothing gets done.
Q: Can you see uses for the Open-site code at other websites, different from Open-site.org?
A: The open-site code could be used for anything with content.
Q: Any suggestions for improvements in the future?
A: Other than fix all the bugs and add all the features in the B&F forum, I think open-site is fine as it is. A RDF dump would be nice too. |
Q: Do you see transforming its ideals into reality, like ODP did, or do you think it has chances to remain a small-sized project?
A: I think Open-Site could turn into a big sized project, maybe a little publicity would help. Just like my website, it started out getting a few page views a year, and now gets thousands a month. I never expected that to happen. I think it was when Google found my site...
