The desire to give semi-official "prizes" to editors for their hard work at Open-Site, based on votes from the whole community, was an idea that existed since the project was started. However, fears that the editorial community was too small to launch such a project canceled the idea at first.
It became a reality when curcio announced the event in the Skate Park forum, on 25th of November 2002. With more than 168 editors, the community seemed ready for such an event.
Nominations have been opened for almost one week, and a lot of editors jumped to cast their own. Alnilam offered to maintain the list of nominees, and it seems everybody added their own foot into the event, even if only by throwing in some nominations. In a record time, the nomination thread started to grow, and soon a whole group of candidates was ready to be presented in the voting polls.
On 1st of December 2002, curcio breaks the ice and creates the first polls dedicated to an awards event. 29 polls have been opened, and in this way, the first event organized 100% by the community itself opened its doors and the voting polls to the public.
After one week of voting, the polls have been closed. On 8th of December 2002, curcio announced the official results, only 3 minutes after the polls have been closed.
The most votes have been received by bunda, as Best Science Editor (12 votes), Sorting for Category Sections as Most Needed Feature (12 votes), and folletti, as Best Graphical Editor (12 votes).
After the list with results, folletti and gameshints started to propose images for the graphical prizes. We ended up with a combination between their proposals, and alnilam announcing the final prizes, both by email and forum post.
The next day, a lot of us were busy to put their logos on their editorial profiles. Congratulations to our winners, to the nominees, and to the rest of the editors that aren't popular enough to get noticed and nominated but who still contribute with their time in making Open-site closer to its goals.
The event proved very successful in bringing its organizers closer as a community and proved to be an example of teamwork and cooperation. I can only hope to see when and how the next series will take place.
