[ history ]

A very tricky water sport, scuba diving makes use of a Scuba or a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. This primary piece of diving equipment makes underwater adventure possible.

A truly enjoyable recreational activity, Scuba Diving can also be used for scientific and military purposes. Scuba Diving makes use of a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, commonly known as scuba, which allows a diver to remain underwater for a considerable period of time. Aside from recreational purposes, scuba diving is also done by scientists, researchers, and the military.

Equipment & Gear

Scuba diving entails the use of different pieces of gear and equipment. Scuba divers, therefore, should know how to operate all pieces of gear and equipment, as well as to fully understand their corresponding functions, so that underwater safety is not compromised.

The main equipment in scuba diving is, of course, the SCUBA or the Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. SCUBA allows divers to breathe underwater. The equipment that enables divers to control buoyancy, as well as to stay underwater is the buoyancy compensator. Also permitting scuba divers to stay underwater are the different weight systems. Depth, pressure, and other underwater data can be monitored by diving instrumentations, such as pressure gauge, depth gauge, and dive computers.

Protecting the body against heat loss and other marine dangers is the exposure suit, which comes in three main types: body skin, wet suit, and dry suit. For the divers to see underwater, diving masks are used. Diving fins, which have two basic types namely open-heeled and close-heeled, allow divers to propel themselves underwater efficiently. While on the water surface, snorkels are used to breathe while facing down. Surface tools are utilized to let other people know that there are scuba divers in a site. Surface tools include Surface Marker Buoys, Decompression Buoys, Diving Shots, Dive Flags, Marker Dyes, and Power Whistles.
