The Vezina Trophy

The Vezina Trophy is awarded each seaon by the National Hockey League to the goalie who is judged to be statistically the best at his position. The general managers of all the NHL teams vote at the end of the season to determine the winner. Up until 1981, this award was given to the goalie/goalies of the team allowing the fewest goals against during the regular season. During the 1981-82 season the William M. Jennings trophy was created for the goalies of the team allowing the fewest goals and the Vezina Trophy goes to the most outstanding goalie during the regular season. The Vezina Trophy is named after NHL Hall of Fame legend Georges Vezina who was an outstanding goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens. In 1925 Vezina collapsed on the ice during a game and was diagnosed as having tuberculosis. After Vezina succumbed to the disease the Montreal Canadiens donated the trophy to the NHL.
