The Hart Memorial Trophy is presented each year by the National Hockey League to the player deemed "most valuable" during the regular season. The winner is determined by the Professional Hockey Writer's Association. The Hart Trophy, as it was originally known, is considered the oldest and most prestigious award a player can win in the NHL. First presented in 1924 the trophy has now been awarded over 80 times to over 50 different players. The Hart Trophy was named after Dr. David Hart who was the father of the Montreal Canadiens former coach and general manager Cecil Hart. Dr. Hart donated the trophy to the NHL.
