The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded each year by the National Hockey League to the best defensive forward in the league. The winner is determined by the Professional Hockey Writer's Association. The 1977-78 NHL season was the first time the award was given out. Bob Gainey of the Montreal Canadiens was the first recipient, winning the award for 4 straight seasons. The award is named after Frank J. Selke, former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens, who was known for the great defensive squads he built.
