Franchise History

The Pittsburgh Pirates franchise was started in 1887 under the name of the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. They played their first game on April 30, 1887 defeating the Chicago White Stockings by a score of 6-2. In 1889, the team changed its name to the Pirates after taking the Philadelphia Athletics star second baseman, Louis Bierbauer, without their consent. The Pirates have utilized five different ballparks during their history, the first being Recreation Park in 1887. In 1891, they played in Exposition Park on the shores of the Allegheny River. Exposition Park hosted the first World Series in 1903. In 1909, they moved to Forbes Field, the first ever steel and concrete stadium in the United States. The Pirates claimed Three Rivers Stadium as their home in 1970 and shared the playing field with the Pittsburgh football team, the Steelers. In 2001, they started play in their current ballpark, PNC Park.
