The Philadelphia Phillies franchise started in 1883 from players remaining from a disbanded team called the Brown Stockings out of Worcester, Massachusetts. They are the oldest team to have only one name and remain in the same city in all of professional sports. The original owner, Al Reach named the team after the locality of Philly, which was short for Philadelphia. The Phillies played their first game on May 1, 1883 while losing to the Providence Grays. During their first year of operation, the Phillies’ record was 17 wins and 81 losses. In 1935, the Phillies is credited with playing in the first Major League night game against the Cincinnati Reds. In all of professional sports history, the Philadelphia Phillies has the lowest winning percentage ever.
