Franchise History

The Milwaukee Brewers franchise was organized in 1969 as part of the Major League Expansion. The team was formerly known as the Seattle Pilots and played the 1969 season in Seattle, Washington. Allan Selig and Edmund Fitzgerald moved the team to Milwaukee before the opening of the 1970 season and renamed the team to the Brewers, a popular profession in Milwaukee and the name of the former Milwaukee team that was organized in 1901.

The original Milwaukee Brewers that was organized in 1901 is not related to the current Milwaukee Brewers. In 1902, the original Brewers changed their name to the Browns and relocated to St. Louis. In 1954, the Browns would relocate to Baltimore and change their name to the Orioles.

In 1998, the current Brewers changed from the American League to the National League. This was part of the Major League realignment plan. This reorganization was needed so that each league would have an even number of teams to accommodate playing schedules. The Brewers are the only team in American League history to change to the National League.
