Franchise History

Major League owners approved the Angels franchise in October of 1960. The franchise was originally owned by actor/singer Gene Autry who was a big fan of baseball. The Angels played their first game on April 11, 1961 defeating the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 7-2. During their first season, the Angels set a Major League record by winning 70 games, the most ever by an expansion team.

The team shared Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles from 1962-1965 with the Dodgers.

On April 9, 1966, the Angels played its first game in Anaheim Stadium under the new name of the California Angels.

Walt Disney Company purchased the team in 1996 and changed the name of the team to the Anaheim Angels in 1997.
