Ewing Marion Kauffman, owner of Marion Laboratories, was awarded the rights to operate an expansion franchise team in the Major Leagues in 1968. Kauffman located the team in Kansas City and named them the Royals. The Royals played their first game at Municipal Stadium on April 8, 1969, defeating the Minnesota Twins by a score of 4-3. In 1973, the Royals moved to Royal Stadium where they play today.
In 1993, pharmacetical billionaire, Ewing Marion Kauffman died from cancer surgury. Royal Stadium was renamed to 'Ewing Kauffman Stadium' on July 2, 1993 in his honor. David Glass, a CEO of Wal-Mart Inc., purchased the Royals in 2000 for $96 million.
