Franchise History

The Detroit Tigers Franchise was established in the American League in 1901. After opening day was delayed, they played their first game on April 25, 1901 against Milwaukee. During their first game at Bennett Park, the Tigers had a nine run ninth inning rally to win the game.

The Tigers played at Bennett Park from 1901 until 1911. During the off-season of 1911, Navin Field was constructed at a cost equivalent to 50 million dollars today. Before the 1939 season, the stadium was renamed Briggs Stadium. In 1961, the concrete and steel structure took on the name of Tiger Stadium. The franchise played their last game in Tiger Stadium on September 17, 1999 before a sell out crowd. On April 11, 2000 the Tigers moved into Comerica Park.
