Franchise History

The Orioles franchise was established in 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers (not related to the current Milwaukee Brewers team). After playing one year in Milwaukee, the team moved to St. Louis and changed the name to the Browns.

On September 28, 1953, the Browns were granted permission by the Baseball Owners to move to Baltimore and change the team name to the Orioles.

The franchise played their first game under the Oriole name in 1954. During their first year under the Oriole name, they won 54 games while losing 100 games. The Orioles did not have a winning season in Baltimore until 1960 when they finished second in their division by winning 89 games and losing 65 games.
