Abner Doubleday (Born 6/26/1819 - Died 1/26/1893)

Abner Double was a West Point graduate and a decorated civil war general. After his internship at West Point, Doubleday went on to fight at Gettysburg, Antietam, Bull Run and was credited with returning the first shots at Fort Sumter during the start of the Civil War.

Abner Doubleday is most noted for being wrongly recognized as the inventor of American baseball. After the death of Doubleday, Abner Graves said he saw Doubleday invent the game in Cooperstown, New York in 1839. Doubleday was, according to historians, a cadet at West Point during the time he supposedly invented the game. Doubleday kept numerous journals and never mentioned anything about inventing the game or even playing baseball.
