Definition of Withdrawal

Withdrawal is a natural method of contraception.

It involves the man removing his erect penis from the woman's vagina before ejaculation.

Advantages of the Withdrawal Method

  • Sexual intercourse is experienced more naturally.
  • If the method is used correctly, pregnancy can normally be avoided.
  • The withdrawal method is accepted by many of the religious people who believe that using artificial methods of contraception is wrong.

Disadvantages of Using the Withdrawal Method

  • Both partners are at risk of sexually transmitted infections.
  • If the man fails to remove his penis from the woman's vagina before ejaculation, the woman is at risk of pregnancy.
  • Unless used very carefully, withdrawal can be an unreliable method of contraception.
