Etymology / Definition

Masturbate: Verb

The word masturbation is derived from the Greek word mezea ("penises") and the Latin verb masturbare ("to defile by hand or to disturb by hand").

Masturbation is the deliberate self stimulation of ones genitals. As the etymology of the word suggests, hands are generally used to arouse the sexual organs which may result in orgasm.

Other Forms: Masturbation (Noun), Masturbator (Noun), Masturbatory (Adjective).

Reasons for Masturbating

People choose to masturbate for a variety of reasons.

  • Masturbation is a simple way of achieving sexual pleasure.
  • Unlike sexual intercourse with a partner, there isn't the risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Masturbation, especially in young people, is a way of exploring one's own body.
  • Masturbation can be used as a way of practicing for sexual intercourse.
  • Older and disabled people may find masturbation useful if they are unable to engage in other sexual activities.
