The Uniting Church in Australia came into being in 1977 after a union of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches in Australia. It is the third largest denomination in Australia.
It was established through negotiations that came to an agreement called the 'Basis of Union'. This document defines the ethos, identity and theology of the union.
The Uniting Church was named as such because of its desire to be in a process of continuing the movement towards uniting with all Christians in mission, worship and sacrament.
