One of the most important principles of the Mormon Church is the idea that “families are forever.” Therefore, it is very important that you know who your family members are.
Members of the Mormon Church research and maintain detailed family records, and the Church uses these to compile one of the largest genealogical databases in the world called "Ancestral File" (tm). In fact, even before the internet, the vault maintained by the Church underneath Salt Lake City contained over 1.5 million rolls of microfilm, the equivalent of 1.8 billion book pages, making it 'the world's greatest genealogy collection." Because of this, the Church is considered one of the leading experts on genealogy today; pick up nearly any book on the subject and it will suggest that you check the database, which the Church shares with members and non-members alike.
