To members of the church the Book of Mormon is classed as revealed scripture and ranks alongside the Bible in authority according to the eighth Article of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God."
The book was first published in 1830 and contains the prophetic writings and history of a group of people who left Jerusalem around 600BC and traveled to the Americas. The Book of Mormon record was primarily gathered by a prophet named Mormon, from whence it gets it's name, and his son Moroni. The Book of Mormon primarily contains the account of the ancestors of Mormon and Moroni. It also contains a brief account, called the Book of Ether, which presents the history of an earlier migration to the Americas.
