Origin and Meaning

Autocrat derives from the Greek, "autokratĂ´r," which literally translates into English as, "Self Ruler."

Overview

Autocracy is a dictatorship, one person with ABSOLUTE power. Despite this meaning, it is impossible for one man or one woman to rule by his or herself. So, they need a loyal group of followers to whom they can delegate a share of power. In almost all autocracies, these delegates seem to be nobles, religious figureheads and militarian leaders.

The monarchical equivalent is an 'Absolute Monarchy.'
