José Manuel Durão Barroso or more commonly José Manuel Barroso was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1956. As well as being the current and 11th President of the European Commission, he served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 2002 untill 2004. He resigned on the 29th of June and in doing so became the President-Designate of the European Commission where he succeeded the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi on the 23rd of November of that year.
Barroso is married to long time partner Margarida Sousa Uva and have three sons between them. He graduated from the University of Lisbon reading law. He then studied in the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where he was awarded an MSc, (Master of Science,) in Economics and Social Sciences. He wanted a career in lecturing and did so by becoming Assistant Professor in the Law School University in Lisbon and also in Georgetown University in the American capital of Washington D.C.
Before he reached university, he activated his political path just before the Carnation Revolution in 1974
