Nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 21, 1957, to a seat vacated by Clarence G. Galston; Confirmed by the Senate on August 5, 1957, and received commission on August 7, 1957. Served as chief judge, 1962-1969. Assumed senior status on December 31, 1970. Service terminated on August 31, 1985, due to death.
