Overview

Debates are a very formal type of argument in which two or more sides must present different opposing views on a particular issue. Predefined rules must be followed and are enforced by a moderator. The winner of a particular debate is the person who effectively persuades an apparently neutral audience, such as a judge or jury in legal court debates, that their point of view can be approved above other points of view.

Most issues raise debates and formal debates may take place through the media, such as in the case of debates between political candidates in an election. Parliamentary debates are common in many countries around the world and involve elected politicians of both the government and opposition parties debating various topical issues. Formal debates of issues may also be an educational activity and the World University Debating Championship is an annual competition between the world's best university debating teams.
