Israel made the first permanent appointment of an Arab to its Supreme Court in the appointment of Salim Jubran, while Esther Hayut and Elyakim Rubinstein were also selected. Controversy was sparked by the appointment of Edna Arbel, a former state prosecuter who suggested Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon should be charged for bribery. Meanwhil, German authorities arrested an 18-year-old high school student on suspicion that he was responsible for creating the Sasser worm, a computer virus that attacked the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.

Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia joined the European Union. A security guard and five westerners were killed in car chase in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
