1: A Baghdad car bomb and various shootings killed several as Iraq struggled to celebrate the new year. Further concerns have been raised about what the year is likely to bring.
2: A scheduled British Airlines flight from London to Washington D.C. was cancelled today. It had been delayed for a day for security reasons.
3: It was a day of bloody protests as Haiti celebrated 200 years of independence. Many are now calling for the resignation of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and a return of transitional government.
4: United States sanctions against Iran have been lifted after 25 years to in order to allow aid to be distributed to last week's earthquake victims.
5: The Republic of Ireland takes presidency of the European Union after a controversial term by Italy. It comes as Protestant and Catholoic boy scout groups in the country merge.
