The term Middle Ages refers to a period of time in Europe roughly spanning a thousand years, from about 500 CE to 1500 CE. This time frame is only an estimation, as the fall of the Roman civilization and the beginning of the cultural rebirth and wide advances in art, science and medicine marking the Renaissance came at different times for different regions of Europe.
The Middle Ages is also referred to as the Medieval period, from the Latin medius aevus. It has also for many years been referred to as the "Dark Ages" though that term has largely fallen out of favor amongst historians due to the negative connotations it carries.
