On 7 December 1941 more than three hundred Japanese planes performed bombing runs on American ships docked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The harbor was currently holding eight battleships and more than ninety other ships. Twenty one ships were put of service, as were three hundred planes. Approximately 2,300 people were killed and around the same number wounded. The next day President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to Congress, calling 7 Dec "a day which will live in infamy." On 11 December 1941 the United States declared war on Japan, causing Japan's allies of Germany and Italy to declare war on the United States. This event had led directly to the entrance of the the United States into World War II.
