World War II

World War II is widely remembered as the most influential event of the 20th century. The sides were the Allies, composed of the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, and many other countries, against the Axis powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The war started on 1 September 1939 when Poland was invaded by Nazi Germany. The war ended on 15 August 1945 with the surrender of Japan. The war is estimated to have killed fourteen million people worldwide, including both soldiers and civilians.

Significant Conflict Timelines

  • 04 February 1938 - Keitel's Appointment - GERMANY
    Hitler announces a reorganization of the army, abolishing the post of war minister, appointing General Keitel as chief of the armed forces high command.

  • 03 April 1939 - Attack on Poland - POLAND
    Adolf Hitler issues a directive to the German armed forces to prepare for an attack on Poland, to be ready to implement by September 1. The code name for it was Plan White.

  • 07 April 1939 - Albania Invasion - ALBANIA
    Italy invades Albania.

  • 10 August 1939 - Blackout - ENGLAND
    A trial blackout is ordered for London, England, in preparations for war.

  • 25 August 1939 - Attack on Poland - POLAND
    Hitler cancels his orders for an attack on Poland.

  • 26 August 1939 - The Irish Regiment - CANADA
    In Canada, the Irish Regiment of Canada is called to active duty.
