  • 2004 USA - SpaceShipOne - A privately built aircraft or spacecraft funded by Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder, and designed by Burt Rutan on this day flew to 328,491 feet, or 62.214 miles. This is some hundreds of feet into what is regarded as 'space'. Pilot Mike Melvill and SpaceShipOne are now recognised by the Guiness World Records organization as the 'first privately funded manned spaceflight'.
