  • 1788 USA - The State of Georgia enters the Union voting to ratify the United States of America Constitution and becomes the fourth state in the modern United States.

  • 1811 USA - The first USA Senator censured - Senator Timothy Pickering, a Federalist from Massachusetts. The motion was approved against him by a vote of 20 to seven. He was found accused of 'violating congressional law by publicly revealing secret documents communicated by the President to the Senate'.

  • 1958 - Callas, Maria - The greatly praised Greek-USA Diva soprano on this day walked off after the first act of Bellini's Norma being performed in Rome. She was said to be ill but was criticized as she was well known and characterised over her temper and indignation. The president of Italy was in the audience.

    Wars and Conflicts

  • 1492 SPAIN - King Boabdil surrendered the Kingdom of Granada to the Spanish Christian forces of King Ferdinand V and Queen Isabella I. The Moors lose their last presence in Spain.
  • 1905 CHINA - During the Russo-Japanese War the Russian fleet surrenders to Admiral Heihachiro Togo (Japan) at the Russian naval base, Port Arthur.
