Derived from an Old English place name, from settlements in Devon, Dorset, Essex, Kent, and Warwick in medieval times.
It is derived from the words 'lang' + 'dun', which meant 'long hill'. It can therefore be said that those with that surname either lived on, or more likely, ruled the long hills (which is consistant with the known history of the name)
