Definition

In Ireland, Jordan has two distinct origins. The first was from Jordan de Exeter (in England) whose descendants later settled in Waterford and Kilkenny. The native patronym "Mac Suirtan" meaning "Sons of Jordan" was adopted by this family.

Jordan was also a popular Anglo-Norman Christian name, used from the days of the Crusades, after the river that they bathed in. The surname is common in Dublin, Galway, Mayo and Antrim.
