Aspects of Studying

  • Environment - Find a comfortable place to study with a cleared table without any distractions. Have everything you need at hand, including a clock. You may need to store these things in a shoe box or small container. Make sure your source of lighting is good, but not too bright. Make sure your study desk is away from loud noises, although classical may improve your study. To maintain good health, remember to relax, sleep and exercise, and try to have a break every ten minutes or so. Have a drinking bottle on hand.

  • Learn and Listen - Think about the lesson prior to it starting, what was previously covered and what your homework or assignment was in the previous lesson. When in class, concentrate on the topic being discussed, not something else. Remember that hearing and listening are two very different things. Take notes on the main points, including things you already know through reading, assignments or general knowledge. Discussing topics may also help in the process.

  • Refresh Your Memory - Just because a class is over is no excuse to forget. Refresh your memory by reading notes, re-writing notes or highlighting main points or ideas, or by any method that works.

  • Research and Reading - When reading books, be actively thinking about what the book is saying, what the key points are, how it relates to the topic or subject concerned and/or how it relates to yourself. Before reading a chapter or section, skim read it, keeping in mind the above, as well as asking yourself about your impression of the book, and what it reminds you of. Ensure when you are reading the book that you understand what is going on, and when you have finished, stop and think about what you have just read, making sure that you can remember what happened. Remember to skim, comprehend, understand and find.

  • Testing - This can be a nervous time. Try to relax during the test, and remember that everyone else is sitting the same test as you (in most cases, anyway). When you are told by the examiner that you can begin writing, (this may be before you are allowed to start), write down all the key points that are going to be covered in the examination. The write down some less important information to remember. Do not spend too long writing these notes. When you are told to start, try to do the most important or easier tasks first, giving you more time for the rest later. The key is to prioritize.
