Types of libraries

  • Academic libraries – These libraries are primarily seen and used in colleges and universities. Although located at a college or university, many of the public institutions provide access to the general public.

  • Public libraries – These libraries are also open to the general public, allowing citizens to borrow books and other materials with the usage of a library card.

  • Research libraries – Primarily used by scholars, these libraries contain a massive amount of information pertaining to a variety of things, or limited to a certain subject.

  • School libraries – These libraries are seen in primary and secondary educational schools to directly match that school’s curriculum.

  • Other libraries – These libraries are often private and cannot be accessed to the general public (e.g. businesses, organizations, and government departments).

Changes

Increasingly libraries have attempted to become more modern and attract customers. Through various marketing methods and diversification, libraries have sought to break traditional stereotypes and appeal to modern interests. There have also been changes to the layout and design of libraries.

An increase in fictional books and children's books has been most notable in public libraries. Some have brighter children's sections with interactive displays; many offer computer facilities with reference software and internet access; some have diversified to audio and video products, CD-ROMs and magazines. Several major public libraries also have cafés and souvenir shops.
