Michael King was widely considered to be the leading historian in New Zealand until his death in a car crash in 2004. His long career as historian and author included the best-selling Penguin History of New Zealand, which was released just months before the death of King and his wife. He is also noted for his contribution to the Oxford History of New Zealand and five editions of The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography. He lectured in several universities around the world, including Washington DC's Georgetown University and New Zealand's University of Waikato. He became an authoritive voice on New Zealand history and society.
