Education

  • Hallowell and Portland Academies in Maine

  • Bowdoin College graduated in 1825

  • He studied theology.

  • After 1826 principal of of the academy in Amherst, Massachusetts and then attended Andover Seminary.

  • Ordained on January 28, 1830 at Worcester, Mass.

  • Became a minister of the Congregational Church at various places in Massachusetts and Connecticut

  • Became a teacher at Abbott's Institution in New York city


  • Contributions
    Following the successful publication of his work The Mother at Home 1844, he involved himself increasingly in historical writing. He became a noted author who wrote extensively about European and US history.
