Types of Sweat Glands

The skin has three different sweat glands: eccrine (merocrine), sebaceous, and apocrine.

The eccrine sweat glands release the sweat used in thermoregulation. They are found in most parts of the body. The sebaceous sweat glands are restricted to regions of skin with hair follicles. These exclude the thick skin of palms and soles of feet. Sebaceous glands contain extensive smooth endoplasmic reticulum and fatty deposits called sebum. The blockage and subsequent infection of these pores are associated with the acne that arise after the onset of puberty. The apocrine sweat glands are localized to the thick hair of the armpit and genitalia.
