Mitochondria

Mitochondria are double-membraned organelles that are involved in energy production. The inner and outer mitochondrial membranes surround an intermembranous space used to store H+ to create an ion gradient for ATP formation. Mitochondria have finger- and tube-like foldings of the inner membrane called cristae. The central interior of mitochondria is known as the mitochondrial matrix.
