Overview

Demospongiae, or demosponges, make up the largest group of the phylum porifera. About ninety percent of the 15,000 known species of sponge are of the class Demospongiae. The skeleton of a demosponge is made up of spicules containing spongin fiber, silica, or a combination of both. All large sponge species are members of this class.
