Biography

DOMINIC A. ANTONELLI (LIEUTENANT COMMANDER, USN)
NASA ASTRONAUT (PILOT)

PERSONAL DATA: Born in Detroit, Michigan. Raised in Indiana and North Carolina. Married to the former Janeen Rose Steves of Puyallup, Washington. They have one child. NASCAR enthusiast whose recreational interests include swimming, hiking, snow boarding, kayaking, and boat building.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Douglas Byrd High School, Fayetteville, NC, 1985. B.S., Aeronautics & Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1989. M.S., Aeronautics & Astronautics, University of Washington, 2002.

SPECIAL HONORS: Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medals (2), Unit Battle Efficiency Awards (2), CVW-9 Landing Signal Officer of the Year (1996), and various service awards.

EXPERIENCE: Antonelli has accumulated over 2300 hours in 39 different kinds of aircraft and has completed 273 carrier arrested landings. He is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (Navy Exchange Pilot, Class 97B).

Antonelli earned the designation of Naval Aviator in May 1991. During his tenure as a fleet Navy pilot, Antonelli served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz with the Blue Diamonds, Strike Fighter Squadron 146, flying F/A-18C Hornets in support of Operation Southern Watch (1996). He earned a Wing Qualification as a Landing Signal Officer (LSO) and served as the Global Positioning System (GPS) Subject Matter Expert for Carrier Air Wing Nine during his tour.

As a Navy test pilot, Antonelli participated in the development and flight testing of Weapons System Integration Software for the F/A-18 for the Advanced Weapons Lab (China Lake, California). He has flown test flights for various projects including radar systems, air-to-air weapons and targeting systems, and air-to-ground targeting systems of the Hornet.

At the time of his selection to the astronaut program, Antonelli was completing final preparations for his return to fleet operations with Strike Fighter Squadron 195 in Atsugi, Japan.

NASA EXPERIENCE: Selected as a pilot by NASA in July 2000, Antonelli reported for training in August 2000. Following the completion of two years of training and evaluation, he was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Shuttle Operations Branch. Antonelli will serve in technical assignments until assigned to a space flight.
