Description

Reefton is situated on the Inangahua River on the eastern boundary of the Victoria Forest Park and the Victoria Range. To the west the rivers flow into the Inangahua from the Paparoa Range.

The wealth of the area during the gold rush is represented by the fact that Reefton has the first electricity supply in the southern hemisphere in 1888, A variety of local museums demonstrate this history.

Forestry, dairy farming and coal mining all developed as alternative industries to gold mining. They are now the basis for Reefton's economy.
