Westport calls itself the "adventure capital of the world", although it was first put on the map by gold mining and coal mining.
From Westport, State Highway 27 leads south down the West Coast along Coast Road and to the east towards Nelson and Blenheim following the Buller River through the scenic Buller Gorge. Leading north, State Highway 67 and several minor roads lead to Karamea before ending at Kohaihai Bluff.
In the town's west is the Buller River and the main road, Broughah Street, where a supermarket and several speciality stores are located.
