Description

Charleston is the next town south along the coast from Tauranga Bay and Westport. To the east many rivers lead from the Paparoa Range. A minor road north leads to the end of one such river, the Totara River. The stretch of coast is called Nine Mile Beach and the Nile River offers amazing scenery and adventure opportunities. The town was originally a gold-mining settlement and some remains from the era still exist. Rock climbing and caving are popular among visitors. The town has a beach and fishing spots.
