The Kaitohe Regional Park offers many outdoor activities such as fishing, swimming, tramping, rafting, kayaking and tubing. Much of the water activities are based along the Hutt and Pakuratahi Rivers, which are dotted with picnic spots and the Hutt Gorge is the base for commercial operations.
Campers are offered lawned camping flats with toilets and barbeques.
Walking tracks include the Weir Walk and Terace Walk for gentle short routes, the Swing Bridge Walk for scenery and native rimu and rata forest and the more serious and scenic Ridge Track that offers full views of the Hutt Valley.
The Park was most notably the location of Rivendell in The Fellowship of the Rings, a film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. This has made the park even more popular that it had previously been.
