Porirua is to Wellington what Manukau is to Auckland. Just like Manukau, Porirua is a multi-cultural city with vibrant and energetic Saturday morning markets and cultural events. Many of Wellington's major retail stores are also situated within the city.

Porirua is home to a variety of museums, like the Museum of Arts and Culture and the New Zealand Police History Museum that displays New Zealand history. The multi-culturalism and large department stores are also an attraction for visitors.
