Pencarrow Coast offers opportunities for walkers and cyclists through surrounding bush. At Pencarrow Head the lighthouse is open to visitors and was home to New Zealand's only woman lighthouse keeper. The surrounding area is home to two lakes and a shipwreck.
In the middle of the Wellington Harbour is Matiu Island, which was previously known as Somes Island. The island is known to provide a setting for peace and relaxation, and can be reached by ferry from Days Bay wharf.
