The Horsham Downs School, Horsham Downs Hall and a local church form the centre of the Horsham Downs rural locality, which originally extended south to Queenwood in the Chartwell suburb of Hamilton. However, extensive urban development has lead to the formation of the Flagstaff suburb in the southern area.
Horsham Downs is known for its many lakes, including Lake Areave and Lake Hotoananga. Most of the lakes are numbered and rowing events are often held on some of them. Most of these lakes are privately owned.
