Description

Whangamata is a seaside town on the east coast of New Zealand in the Thames-Coromandel District. The town is often in the news during the summer ‘Whanga Week’ over New Year when it is populated by youths with loud music and excessive alcohol.

During the rest of the summer Whangamata is a great surfing destination and family holiday spot serviced by a great selection of cafes and local shops.

The history of the town isn’t in its seaside location, but in the gold and Kauri timber that was extracted from the area during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Popular non-beach attractions include the Wentworth Valley.
